What Are Injectables?
/
Injectables contain ingredients that can reduce fine lines and wrinkles when injected under the skin. Some can reduce muscle movement along with the appearance of wrinkles, while others aim to plump the skin and stimulate collagen production. Join Dr. Mesna in our Minneapolis plastic surgery office to see which injectables can benefit you.
Types of Injectables We Offer
BOTOX
BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most widely known injectables, and for a good reason. It was the first injectable treatment of its kind to be approved by the FDA for short-term cosmetic use in 2002. BOTOX Cosmetic reduces muscle movement in the face, preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s ideal for small areas of the face, such as crow’s feet and lip lines.
Dysport
Dysport® is similar to BOTOX since it’s a botulinum toxin type A injectable that limits muscle movement around the injection site. Dysport was FDA approved in 2009 and works well on large surface areas of the face. It’s more diluted than BOTOX Cosmetic and spreads faster, making it ideal for forehead and glabellar (frown) lines.
JUVÉDERM
JUVÉDERM® is a collection of dermal fillers used to treat areas of the face. JUVÉDERM products contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, which plumps the skin. Our office carries JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, which can be used to add volume to sunken cheeks and contour the chin area. The effects of JUVÉDERM fillers can last about 6-18 months.
Restylane
Like JUVÉDERM, Restylane® is a family of hyaluronic acid-based fillers, though they're thinner in consistency, allowing them to spread quicker. Restylane products can be used to correct smile lines, facial wrinkles and folds, lost volume in the cheeks, lost volume on the hands, and thin lips.
Sculptra
Sculptra® is a dermal filler that uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to stimulate collagen production. This restores facial volume over time, giving you a plump, youthful appearance. PLLA fillers typically last longer than hyaluronic acid fillers but may require about three sessions for the best results.
RHA
Resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA®) is a range of dermal fillers designed with facial expressions and dynamic movement in mind. The unique formulation of RHA and manufacturing allow it to closely resemble the natural hyaluronic acid present in your skin. The results of RHA injections appear natural, preventing stiffness as you express yourself in daily life.

Physically Healthy
You should be in good physical health when undergoing any aesthetic treatment. This will help ensure a smooth and successful healing process.
Of Age
The FDA requires patients to be at least 18 years old to receive botulinum toxin and at least 21 years old to receive dermal fillers.
Non-Smokers
Smoking and using nicotine products can lead to faster collagen breakdown, shortening the results of your injectables. We recommend patients quit using nicotine products before receiving injectables.
Understanding
Unlike the dramatic results you can obtain with plastic surgery, aesthetic results from botulinum toxin and fillers are more limited in what they can accomplish. Patients should have realistic expectations for their results.
The Process of Receiving Injectables
In a study conducted in 2022, botulinum toxin type A injectables were the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed (8.7 million), and hyaluronic acid fillers were the second most popular (4.8 million). According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
Injectables have the power to smooth wrinkles, plump lips, add youthful volume to the face, and more, all in just one quick appointment.
Making Your Results Last With at-Home Care
Following a Skincare Routine
An anti-aging skincare routine can plump your skin and keep wrinkles to a minimum. A standard anti-aging routine includes applying sunscreen to the face and neck every morning, moisturizer morning and night, and retinol a few times a week at night. We offer skincare products at our Minneapolis, MN, office and can make recommendations based on your specific concerns.
Minimizing Sun Exposure
The sun's UV rays are harmful to the skin and can cause premature aging. Try to stay out of the sun when you can and wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses if you're planning on being outdoors.
Eating a Healthy Diet
Healthy foods like nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and fish are good for your skin as they provide vitamins, minerals, and proteins that are vital for skin health. In addition to eating a healthy diet, be sure to drink plenty of water to maintain your skin's elasticity.
Quitting Bad Habits
Smoking and drinking can take a toll on your skin and slow the healing process after your injectable treatment. We recommend minimizing your intake of alcohol and quitting smoking before your treatment. Drop the habits altogether for the best results.
