Restore Your Figure and Your Confidence with Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer leaves many women unhappy and lacking confidence in their new figure after undergoing a mastectomy or lumpectomy. We understand the distress this can cause, especially when the massive challenge of fighting cancer has been overcome. For women who would like to regain a more natural-looking figure following breast cancer treatment, Dr. Gregory Mesna offers safe, effective breast reconstruction. At our practice in Minneapolis, MN, breasts may be reconstructed with breast implants, with purified fat collected during liposuction, or with tissue from the patient’s own body. Breast reconstruction performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon can help you restore an important symbol of your femininity and move on with your life.
Safely Enhancing Your Breasts Following a Mastectomy or Lumpectomy
While it is difficult to consider the possibility of cancer returning, it is an important consideration for us in recommending treatment. We ask our patients for their medical history to review their cancer treatment, and use a variety of technologies to examine breast tissue and recommend the right cosmetic solution. The problem of returning cancer can be further complicated by additional surgery, so we are very careful in recommending these treatments.
We are honored to serve women with breast reconstruction procedures, helping them reclaim control over their lives after the devastating effects of breast cancer.
After you have been approved for breast reconstruction, Dr. Mesna can recommend the surgical techniques that will help you achieve your cosmetic goals. Most often, breast augmentation with implants is used to restore breasts to a fuller, more natural-looking state. If a significant amount of tissue had to be removed in the course of cancer treatment, we may also recommend a skin or fat graft. There are a number of other surgical techniques that are sometimes incorporated into treatment, all of which can be discussed with Dr. Mesna during a consultation.
Treatment Considerations
Breast reconstruction using breast implants is performed solely on the breast area. This results in minimized scarring, lower risk of infection, and a shorter recovery period than when tissue is grafted from other parts of the body. In a certain number of implant patients, there will not be enough tissue to cover the implant. If this is the case, Dr. Mesna may use a tissue expander to gradually stretch the skin to fit over the implant.
When reconstruction is performed with fat gathered during liposuction, it is a more complicated procedure and requires a longer recovery period. However, the procedure results in a breast that looks and feels more natural. When the patient’s own fat is used, it may be extracted from the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or other areas.
Flap reconstruction uses skin, fat, and muscle from another part of the body, usually from the abdomen or the back. It requires more than one surgery and a longer recovery time, but can produce very good results. If only one breast is being reconstructed, Dr. Mesna may recommend a breast lift or a breast reduction on the other breast to achieve the best proportion and symmetry.
