Blepharoplasty
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on tightening the skin around the eyes. With blepharoplasty, our plastic surgeon can remove excess skin, fat, and puffiness from the upper and lower eyelids to create a more awake and youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty can also address severe cases of drooping eyelids that obstruct peripheral vision, restoring your field of vision and improving the appearance of your eyes.
Look Younger, See Better With Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplasty can provide many benefits. With this surgical procedure, Dr. Mesna can:
- Improve peripheral vision
- Reduce wrinkles around eyelids
- Remove fat deposits that make eyes appear puffy
- Eliminate bags under the eyes
- Tighten loose skin
- Create a more youthful appearance
Types of Eyelid Surgery
/
There are two types of eyelid surgery: upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery. Both surgery techniques are offered at our Edina and Minneapolis, MN, plastic surgery offices.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
If the upper eyelids are sagging, they can impact your appearance and self-confidence. In severe cases, they can actually impair vision. As we age, the muscles weaken and the skin begins to lose its elasticity, which results in sagging of the eyelids that can actually obstruct vision.
Upper eyelid surgery corrects this by eliminating excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue. Dr. Mesna can then reposition and tighten the remaining tissue so that it appears younger and healthier.
To perform this surgery, a small incision is made along the upper eyelid (after anesthetizing the area for your comfort). Once the incision has been made, Dr. Mesna can remove extra tissue, reposition the muscle, and pull the skin taut, at which point he will close the incision with fine stitches. There is little to no visible scarring, and patients can leave the office the same day as treatment.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Unsightly bags and excessive sagging of the lower eyelid can be addressed with lower eyelid surgery. To perform this surgery, an incision will be made along the natural crease of the lower eyelid or inside of the lower eyelid. This incision provides access to the underlying fat and muscle tissue. Excess tissue will be removed, and the muscle tissue will be repositioned. Once this step is complete, the skin will be pulled taut and the incision will be closed. Fine stitches are used, and there is little to no visible scarring after healing is complete. Typically, the procedure takes no more than two hours and you can leave our office the same day as treatment.
If there is excess fat tissue but the skin is not sagging excessively, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty procedure may be well-suited to the patient's needs. During this treatment, excess fat tissue is removed, but no skin is excised. This technique leaves zero visible scarring because the fat can be removed through very small incisions.

Dr. Mesna Explains This Sought-After Plastic Surgery
"I am SO happy with the outcome of my surgery." 5-Star Reviews From Twin City Patients
Dr Mesna is FANTASTIC! I had gone through multiple consults for the procedures that I was looking into. I did not get an "awesome" feeling about the doctors I had met with. From the minute that he walked in the door I was totally at ease... I would refer anyone and everyone to Dr Mesna. I am SO happy with the outcome of my surgery.

View on GoogleWhat Causes the Eyelids to Sag or Get Puffy?
As we get older, our eyelids stretch and cause our eyelid muscles to lose strength. This can cause droopy upper eyelids and lower eyelids. Sagging skin can cause eye irritation and interfere with your upper, lower, and side vision. Cosmetically, sagging or puffy eyes can make you look exhausted or older than your actual age.
This surgical procedure can restore your vision and make you appear more youthful by eliminating excess skin and puffy areas around the eyes.
Candidates for Blepharoplasty
Both men and women are candidates for blepharoplasty. The eyelid surgery patients we see are typically Minnesota men and women in their 40s and up. By this point in an individual's life, the aging process has taken its toll on the skin, fat, and muscle tissue of the eyelids, and men and women begin to develop conspicuous and heavy under-eye bags, wrinkles, and sagging eyelids. If your upper eyelids have begun to sag to the point that they impair your vision, our team can provide a safe and effective solution and help you regain your sight and your confidence.
Blepharoplasty vs. Brow Lift
A brow lift, or forehead lift, is intended to lift drooping eyebrows and smooth lines between the brows and along the forehead. If these cosmetic issues affect you, a brow lift may be a better solution than eyelid surgery. Alternatively, a brow lift can be performed in combination with eyelid surgery. We can determine which approach is right for you during a consultation at our Minneapolis, MN, practice.

Facelift
A facelift can address sagging skin, excess fat tissue, and deep lines under the eyes and along the face. By pairing a facelift with an eyelid procedure, patients can achieve comprehensive changes to the face. Our plastic surgeon can target the lower face or mid-face with this cosmetic procedure, or perform a mini facelift if the patient doesn't need a full facelift.
Neck Lift
The neck is often one of the first features to show signs of aging. Undergoing a neck lift can tighten loose, sagging skin on the neck and around the jaw line. This procedure can also remove excess fat under the jaw line.
Rhinoplasty
Your nose plays a big role in the appearance of your face. Altering the size and shape of your nose along with refining your eyelids can produce dramatic results.
BOTOX Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes your face muscles, reduces wrinkles, and prevents new wrinkles from forming around the injection site. BOTOX pairs well with blepharoplasty as eyelid surgery is not intended to eliminate wrinkles from the corners surrounding the eyes.
