Are you wondering if blepharoplasty is right for you? Read on to learn more about the qualifications and candidacy for blepharoplasty.
Aesthetic Concerns
Drooping upper eyelids, impaired vision due to sagging upper eyelids, puffy bags under the eyes, deep under eye circles, and under eye wrinkles are conditions that can be treated with blepharoplasty. Upper eyelid surgery is aimed at tightening the overhanging skin on the upper eyelids that contribute to an aging appearance and obstructed vision. Lower eyelid surgery can smooth out the skin under the eyes to reduce a tired-looking appearance.
General Qualifications
Most men and women become interested in eyelid surgery due to the cosmetic concerns they have about the skin surrounding the eyes. But there are also some general qualifications that Dr. Mesna will discuss during your consultation at our Minneapolis practice to make sure you are a good candidate for treatment.
Realistic Expectations
We want patients to achieve an outcome that they are happy with. If blepharoplasty won’t achieve your specific goals, we may recommend a different procedure or no treatment at all.
Non-Smokers
Smoking can interfere with anesthesia and the healing process. If patients do smoke, we want them to quit for at least four weeks before surgery, and two months after surgery.
Good General Health
In order to safely undergo surgery and achieve great results, patients should be in good general health. Any medical conditions should be under control and under the supervision of your primary care physician. We will also want to check the medications you are taking to make sure they won’t affect anesthesia or interfere with the healing process.
Medical Concerns That May Affect Candidacy
There are certain medical conditions that may preclude you from being a good candidate for treatment. Vision conditions such as dry eyes, glaucoma, pre-existing eye or vision problems, or significant eye or eyelid infections could make you a poor candidate for eyelid surgery.
In addition, uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, and thyroid disorders could be cause for concern. Finally, a refusal to quit smoking makes patients poor candidates for treatment.
Dr. Mesna will review your cosmetic goals and ask questions about your general health to determine if this effective treatment is right for you. Alternatives to eyelid surgery include BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers. Dr. Mesna will discuss these options with you during your consultation.
