The Importance of the Eyes
Research shows that a person’s eyes are the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. If your eyes are bright, pleasant, and attractive, you’ll send a much different message than if they look tired, aged, and droopy. Because you will never have a chance to make that first impression again, if your lower eyelids are permanently baggy, consider blepharoplasty to improve your facial appearance. Not only will you change the way others view you, you’ll improve your self-image, as well.
Why Under Eye Circles Occur
While tiredness, allergies, hormones, weather changes, and salty foods can contribute to bags under the eyes, when the bags are permanent, they have a negative effect on a person’s appearance. Some people are more prone to bags under their eyes, due to heredity. Others have tugged on their lower eyelid for years while applying makeup, and all that stretching took a toll on the skin’s elasticity. Over time, whether or not skin endures the stresses of pulling, natural loss of elasticity and the pull of gravity can make under-eye skin loose and saggy.
About Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery is quick, safe, and highly effective. Nearly anyone with good health and saggy eye skin makes a great candidate for blepharoplasty.
You will receive anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure. For under-eye surgery, a small incision is made under the lower eyelid or at the lash line, where it will not be visible. From that site, excess skin and fat are removed, and muscle tissue is repositioned. Then, fine, self-dissolving sutures seal the incision. Total treatment time is usually about an hour or two, depending on whether you’re having upper, lower, or upper and lower blepharoplasty. You will need a driver to take you home after surgery.
You may experience dry eyes for a few weeks following surgery, but it should subside. You can use artificial tears to moisten your eyes. Apply ice or a freezer pack to the surgical site to reduce swelling. The surgeon will advise you on what kind of pain medication to use. Many over-the-counter pain medications can increase bleeding, so please follow postoperative instructions to speed healing.
Lower eyelid surgery usually does not require retreatment, but keep in mind that your eyes and skin will still age naturally.
