Advantages of the Areolar Breast Augmentation Incision

Incision Location

The areolar breast augmentation incision is often referred to as the nipple incision. This description is slightly misleading. Although the areolar incision is close to the nipple, it does not actually touch the nipple at all. Another nickname for this technique is the donut incision. This is a little more accurate. The areolar incision actually encircles the areola (the darker area of skin that surrounds the nipple).

Advantages of the Areolar Incision

There are several technique options available to patients undergoing breast augmentation, but the areolar incision is one of the most widely used. This is because it offers many advantages. Below are some of the benefits that make the areolar incision such a popular option:

• It allows for multiple implant placements: There are several positions in which a breast implant can be placed during breast augmentation surgery. Many patients wish to have the implants placed entirely beneath the chest muscle, but patients may also wish to have the implant partially beneath the chest muscle, or over the top of it. Placement may be limited by some incision techniques, but the areolar incision accommodates all placement options.
• Most implants can be accommodated: Saline implants are placed while they are empty and then filled once in position, so they are suitable for any surgical technique. However, silicone implants are inserted while full. This can limit the appropriate incision techniques. Fortunately, unless patients are opting for a particularly large silicone implant, it is likely that the areolar incision will be suitable for either a silicone or saline breast implant.
• Allows for increased precision and control: Because the areolar incision is placed directly on the breast, it gives Dr. Mesna great control and precision. He is working in close proximity to where the implant will be placed and has a great view of the surgical site. This can increase both the safety and success of surgery.
• Discreet scarring: The areolar incison will result in a scar directly on the breast. However, the incision is made just outside of the areola, so as the skin heals, the scar that’s left blends in well with the pale skin surrounding the areola. Additionally, because of its location, the scar can be hidden beneath even the most minimal of clothing.
