The Microdermabrasion Schedule
At the practice of plastic surgeon Gregory T. Mesna, only the safest and most effective non-surgical skin care options are made available to our patients. Of these, one of the most time tested and consistently successful is microdermabrasion. At our practice in Minneapolis, your microdermabrasion schedule will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation with Dr. Mesna.
Microdermabrasion is a potentially ideal treatment for anyone who wishes to restore radiance and health to his or her skin. One of the greatest advantages of microdermabrasion is that treatment can be repeated as necessary without causing harm to the skin. Just how often you undergo microdermabrasion will depend on your unique needs and goals.
A Gentle Approach to Rejuvenating the Skin
Microdermabrasion is one of the gentlest of all skin rejuvenation treatments. Dr. Mesna uses a small handheld device that blows fine crystals across the surface of the skin to break up dead skin cells. These cells are then suctioned away to reveal the healthier skin lying underneath. No anesthesia is necessary, and any discomfort that is experienced is minimal and mild.
Because microdermabrasion is so gentle, treatments can be repeated according to the patient’s wishes. In general, multiple microdermabrasion treatments are required to achieve the desired results to begin with. As few as four or as many as 12 treatments may be necessary initially. These treatments are spaced about a week to a week-and-a-half apart. There is no downtime associated with the procedure, and patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately, although precautions must be taken to protect the treated skin from sunburn.
After the initial round of treatments, the frequency of your microdermabrasion sessions will depend entirely on your goals and your schedule. The human skin takes about a month to regenerate, so many of our patients choose to undergo monthly maintenance treatments in order to keep their skin looking fresh and smooth. It is possible, however, for patients to undergo microdermabrasion as frequently as once a week. Generally, we find that monthly maintenance is sufficient to maintaining excellent results; however, it can vary from patient to patient.
Am I a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Most patients with basically healthy skin can undergo microdermabrasion; however, it is very important that they understand the limits of the procedure. Because microdermabrasion is so gentle, it does not produce effects as dramatic as chemical peels and laser treatments. It will also not lead to improvement of deeper lines and wrinkles.
Microdermabrasion is potentially ideal for any patient who wishes to “freshen up” his or her skin by improving its tone and texture. Multiple treatments are necessary to produce the best possible results, while maintenance treatments are generally recommended.
